The Internet is a vast network of computers located all over the Globe. The "Net" as it is commonly called consists of a very large number of smaller networks of computers. At the utility level, the Net is a source of information and a tool used to communicate via e-mail, instant messaging, newsgroups, etc.
This is a part of the Internet designed to allow easier navigation of the network through the use of graphical user interfaces and hypertext links between different addresses. It is more commonly called the Web.
The most efficient way of finding information on the Internet is via Search Engines. A Search Engine is a program that explores the Internet in search of information requested by the user. Its function is to compile large, searchable databases or indices of Internet pages. Some popular Search Engines are Yahoo, Lycos and Ask Jeeves.
Electronic Mail, more commonly known as E-Mail, is by far the most popular application used on the Internet. As the name implies, it is a means of sending mail to one or more persons using electronic means. E-Mail can be used to send letters as well as other documents to other Internet users miles away within minutes.
This is a software application used to access the World Wide Web and access Web Pages. It presents to the user a simple point-and-click interface with easy to use navigation buttons arranged in a handy toolbar. The two most popular Web Browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
A Hyperlink is a "tool" used on Web Pages to "transport" users to other Web Pages or another location in the same page. The Hyperlink can present itself in the form of highlighted text or pictures.
In the same way a bookmark is used to mark a page in a book, bookmarks are used to save links to web pages so that they can be easily retrieved at a later time without having to retype the address of that page. Bookmarks are stored in a file by the Web Browser in such a way that the user just has to know the name of the website rather than the address.
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It is a means of transferring files from one computer to another over a network. FTP can be used to upload files to a remote computer or download files from a remote computer.
A protocol is a set of rules that define the way in which information is exchanged between two or more computers. The most common protocols used on the Internet are http (Hyper Text Transport Protocol, used by Web Browsers to retrieve information), SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol, used to send mail), POP (Post Office Protocol, used to retrieve mail) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol, used to transfer files between computers).
This is a method of instantly sending a message to one or more users over a network. Instant Messaging can be used to send messages to other users thousands of miles away in real time. Several different applications known as "Chat Messengers" are available for Instant Messaging such as AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ and MSN Messenger.
Apart from text and graphics, sound and video are also available on the Internet. With Streaming Media, a sound or video file is fed to the user while it is being "played" so that the user doesn't have to wait for the entire file to download before using it.
This is a technology used to communicate in real time over networks using sound and video. It allows users to interact with others in remote locations without having to leave their homes or offices. Such a technology has already allowed many companies and individuals to save money which would otherwise be spent on long distance phone calls and business trips.
Electronic Commerce is a way of buying and selling products and services via electronic means, typically over the Internet.
You cannot "catch" a virus by simply looking at a Web Page. However, viruses can be caught by downloading and opening files from un-trusted sources. The best way to protect yourself and computer is to not accept files from un-trusted sources, namely websites and people you do not know. One way of detecting viruses is to use an anti-virus application and update it frequently using updates provided from the manufacturer's website.
The term "hacker" is a very misused word. A hacker is a programmer whose intent is to test computer systems and software, identify programming errors and fix any problems found with it. The person whose intent is to break into systems with the intention of causing harm is known as a "cracker". Common ways used to access another computer system are via breakdown of administrative controls for example password controls and via software programs that are placed on the computer. To protect your computer, utilize and maintain the confidentiality of passwords and simply refuse files from unknown and un-trusted sources.
